Colourful Rustic & Wildflower Woodland & Tipi Wedding

I have gone to wedding heaven today with WWW followers Abi and Mod’s Low Osgoodby Grange wedding in North Yorkshire. Not only did they have a beautiful woodland ceremony with log cutting ceremony ritual, but they also had a magical rustic tipi reception. A day that dreams are made of.

I adore the bright wildflower-style florals throughout, the totally beautiful outfits and all the rustic wooden touches. There were sunflowers, relaxed vibes, a super cute dog in attendance plus lots of beautiful sunshine.

Peter Hugo Photography, thanks ever so much for sharing these marvellous images with us. What a fantastic day!

The Proposal

We have a little van that we have converted to a camper and like to go off on lots of adventures with our dog, Alfie. We have travelled around Wales several times and Mod especially feels a bit of a magical connection to the place whenever we go as he grew up there until moving to Yorkshire at age 7.

There is a beautiful stretch of river close to the village of Llechryd which we have both kayaked down and walked alongside. One of the first times we did the walk, Mod had bent down on one knee to tie up his shoelace, pretended he was about to start proposing and then teased me for the next ten minutes about how I had thought he was going to propose!

I forgot that this ever even happened, but Mod said that he decided on that day that we would go back to that spot and he would propose for real. He started looking for a ring as soon as we got home. We went back the following year and Mod proposed, and had to remind me of the story and why he had proposed in that spot!!

The Vision

We wanted something fun, rustic and relaxed, with lots of colour and nature.

The Venue

Low Osgoodby Grange in North Yorkshire, around 30 minutes from where we live. Covid interfered with our plans and we had to change venue amongst other things, but we couldn’t be happier that we did in the end as it was just perfect and the owner of the venue, Holly, was incredible!

We had our ceremony in their woodland area followed by a reception in tipis by the lake.

The Styling & Decor

We didn’t have a particular theme or colour scheme but wanted bright wildflowers and sunflowers for our flowers. We hadn’t given Yvonne much of a brief but what she created absolutely floored us! Yvonne even made little wands for our young flower girls and a floral collar for our dog.

Some of our bridesmaids gave us gifts so our flowers have been immortalised forever which is lovely. Dried flowers from the bouquet made into coasters and a Christmas tree ornament with resin (@handmadebyelltask2 on Instagram), and a beautiful personalised cushion with artwork of my actual bouquet (@youvebeenfaced on Instagram).

All of our signs and stationery featured wildflowers so tied in beautifully. We also included lots of natural woody elements in our décor which worked well with the venue. We were really lucky as Mod’s sister, Lauren, very kindly made us our beautiful and absolutely delicious wedding cake which tied in perfectly.

Your Outfits

My dress was Pronovias’ Edel gown and was perfect. I felt like a woodland fairy for the day! My mum was the one who found it and it was exactly what I had imagined in my head.

Mod’s sister, Rhi, is very talented and used to make wedding dresses professionally, so I was really lucky to have her as she did all of the alterations and made it fit perfectly. Throughout the day I wore forest green heels to match my bridesmaids. Mod’s aunt, Paula, is an artist and very kindly hand-painted wildflowers onto some white platform Converse for me, which I changed into after eating. I was able to dance all night and they were just beautiful!!

Mod wore a Moss London slim fit suit in teal herringbone and a Charles Tyrwhitt Liberty fabrics floral print shirt with braces. My mum also crafted matching pocket squares in the Liberty fabric.

The Ceremony & Music

Our ceremony took place in the woodland and our celebrant, Louisa (@starrgazing_celebrant), did an absolutely incredible job of creating us a completely unique, meaningful and personal ceremony which was also hilarious at times!

We included our own vows, a handfasting ceremony where our parents all got involved and a singalong of Hall & Oates – You Make My Dreams.

As we love the outdoors and were getting married in a woodland, Louisa also gave us the idea to do a log-cutting ritual which is a German tradition where newlyweds embark on their first challenge as a couple by cutting a log of wood in half with a double ended saw. The idea being that this is the first obstacle you overcome in your marriage! This was something we had never heard of or seen before but we loved the idea and it linked in so well. Louisa had all of the guests chanting SCHNEIDEN (cut, in German)!

For our music, the bridesmaids and I walked down the aisle to Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles as Mod has always called me his ‘sunshine girl’. We left the ceremony to Stay Young – Oasis and our first dance was to This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) – Natalie Cole as we wanted something upbeat, easy to dance to, and not too soppy.

We had an incredible 6 piece funk and soul band on the evening, TC’s Funky Nuts and the dance floor was never empty! We love live music and this was definitely one of the best decisions we made. We absolutely love a dance at a wedding.

Your Photographer & Filmmaker

We booked our photographer Pete really early on in the planning process as we knew we wanted a certain style and he fit that so perfectly – relaxed, bright, creative and he also confirmed he loved dogs! As well as being amazing at what he does, Pete is hilarious, lovely and was a pleasure to have with us on the day – he felt like another guest.

We aren’t people that like to pose for photos so did worry a bit about how the photos would come out, but Pete was amazing at prompting us to get those magic shots.

We hadn’t initially budgeted for a videographer but decided with about a month to go that we would go for it and we were incredibly lucky that our venue’s recommended videographer was available. Matt was lovely and got incredible footage that captured our day exactly how we remember! We are so glad that we decided to go for it as the highlights video especially is stunning and Matt turned everything around for us so quickly.

The Honeymoon

We had a minimoon in our camper at Hebden Bridge, which was lovely and we would thoroughly recommend!

We weren’t able to go away for a longer period for our honeymoon until winter due to Mod’s business but went to Mauritius for 2 and a half weeks in January. We had a magical time swimming, hiking, eating, dancing, drinking, exploring and making friends with all of the local wildlife. We absolutely fell in love with Mauritius, its wonderful people and cuisine and their vanilla rum and hope to go back in the future!

Memorable Moments

Our personalised ceremony was amazing from start to finish and included lots of memorable moments. All of the speeches were hilarious and thoughtful in equal measure. We and all of our guests talked about the food for weeks after!

We enjoyed some quiet moments with just us and our photographer when we (fairly tipsy by that point!) went to get some golden hour photos. It was lovely to have that bit of time alone in an otherwise fairly surreal day!

The band were just incredible and we had to be told by our photographer to ‘Stop Chakka Khan-ing!’ when we were supposed to be keeping still for a shot but couldn’t stop dancing haha. To have everybody we loved in one place at one time was magical.

Advice For Other Couples

My dad had said to me to simply do what Mod and I truly wanted as at least then there would be 2 people at the wedding who were 100% happy with it and that turned out to be the best advice ever!

People will always have opinions on what they think a wedding should be and it would be impossible to please everyone so you should focus on trying to craft the personal best day ever for you two and then you can’t go wrong!

Let your personalities shine through. Don’t include anything that doesn’t make sense to you and your partner just because it is tradition, or expected. Also, pick your suppliers carefully as they can make your life a million times easier – ours certainly did.

It really doesn’t get any more beautiful than this special day. Wow!

Abi and Mod, I can’t thank you enough for sharing your stunning Low Osgoodby Grange wedding story with us.
