Stunning White & Greenery Rustic Barn Wedding

I adore how this St Andrews barn wedding held at Falside Mill has a modern yet rustic feel to it. Introducing Gillian and Jamie’s stunning white and greenery-style celebration. Woohoo!

Their day was a real triumph, with magical lighting, sensational flowers, the most stylish outfits and elegant stationery. There was a darling cake, a suspended flower cloud and even a moon gate flower arch. Not to mention Gillian and Jamie didn’t stop smiling all day long.

Thanks ever so much to Joy Story for sharing these absolutely amazing images with us.

St Andrews Barn Wedding

The Proposal

After 10 years being together, Jamie finally popped the question on a weekend away to York, the city where we enjoyed our first trip away together 10 years previous. The proposal took place during a late afternoon stroll around the York city walls, where Jamie got down on one knee.

Gillian was shocked and very emotional despite having talked about this for quite some time.

The Vision

First of all, Jamie has admitted that Gillian was the brains and driving force behind the vision for our wonderful wedding. With the wedding taking place in a barn-style venue, the idea was to make it rustic with a wow factor. We tried to achieve this by keeping colour schemes to a minimum however having plenty greenery and floral displays to make the venue as bright as possible.

The Venue

Falside Mill is a beautiful barn-style venue located just outside St. Andrews in Fife. It boasts several different spaces which can cater for all sizes of weddings and events. Despite it being a ‘blank canvas’, it is finished to an extremely high standard and allows couples to create their own ideas and vision.

Your Outfits

Gillian’s dress, veil and hairpiece were purchased from Eleganza Sposa in Glasgow.
Shoes – Sophia Webster
Gillian wore her mum’s earrings which were Carolina Herrera.

Gillian chose this dress as she always wanted one which had sleeves and detail with an open back and a long train which was enhanced further by her extremely long veil.

Jamie wore a kilt which was from McCall’s Highlandwear.

The tartan was called Hunting Pride which was exclusive to the McCall’s shop. This was chosen because it was in keeping with the colour theme and fitted well with the venue. Also because Jamie liked the style of the tartan which was not too flamboyant.

The Ceremony & Music

The ceremony was conducted by Iain Whitelaw, a humanist celebrant local to the area and also where we grew up. Iain was fantastic at keeping the guests involved and laughing throughout. He made us feel at ease and helped to calm our nerves.

Gillian walked down the aisle to the soundtrack He Sleeps from the film Pretty Woman.

We had two songs playing whilst we signed the Marriage certificate:

1st Song – Artist, Maisie Peters. Track, I’ll be there for you
2nd Song – Artist, Ellie Goulding. Track, Love me like you do (this was played by a live saxophonist, Konrad Wiszniewski).

Our music for walking back up the aisle was Young Hearts Run Free by Candi Staton, which was also performed by Konrad. It was such an upbeat and happy song for us and our guests.

Your Photographer & Filmmaker

Our photographer was Sarah Craig of Joy Story Photography.

Our videographer was Ashely Hope Films.

The Styling & Decor

The styling and décor came from various Pinterest inspiration and a lot of Gillian’s own ideas. Gillian was very clear with what she wanted and how she envisaged the venue looking on our wedding day.

Furniture hire – tables and chairs from Falside Mill. Sofas and wicker chairs from Virginia’s Vintage Hire.
Cake – a 3-tier cake from A Bonnie Wee Cake
Flowers – Wild Rose Flowers
Colours – neutral greens, cream, a touch of peach
Signage – Lucy McSpirit Design

The Honeymoon

Our honeymoon was planned through Trailfinders who were extremely helpful with everything.

We wanted a trip with a variety of activities which we both enjoyed and had on our bucket list. First stop was San Francisco where we enjoyed many of the city’s attractions and excellent cuisine.

We then travelled by car to Yosemite National Park to spend a couple of days exploring the unique and spectacular scenery. We were even lucky enough to spot a bear and her cub whilst out walking in the park! From there we made a stop in Monterey on our way back to San Fransico.

Our final destination was the paradise island of Bora Bora in French Polynesia, where we swam with sharks and snorkelled in the crystal-clear blue lagoon. It really was the trip of a lifetime!

Memorable Moments

Definitely walking down the aisle for Gillian, something she has always dreamed about. It may sound cliché however having all of our close friends and family there to celebrate with us was the best feeling ever.

Advice For Other Couples

We were given some very good advice before our wedding which we made sure to do on the day. It was to take at least 10/15 minutes together where you could just chat to each other and absorb everything. The day goes by so quickly and everyone is keen to speak with you, so it is important to make at least a little bit of time for one another.

Enjoy the day and don’t worry or stress about the small things, whether that be during the planning stage or on the day itself.

It really doesn’t get any more special now does it?

Gillian and Jamie, I can’t thank you enough for sharing your epic St Andrews barn wedding story with us.
